Training in Italy

I have now been in Italy for over a week, and have been training hard every day. We are done with our first training block, and taking a day off before starting the second training block.

Training with the U.S team, as well as some other countries such as Finland and Japan has been very productive. The first block was focused around maneuvers (tacks + gybes), as well as adapting to the lake. This first block is the “warmup” for training blocks 2 and 3 which will be focused more around racing with some of the other national teams.

The conditions on the lake have led to some interesting, and tricky training sessions. Typical conditions on the Lake are a puffy and inconsistent northerly wind In the morning, and a strong and consistent southerly in the afternoon. Due to rainy conditions the past week, we have not had any strong southerlies in the afternoon, so we have been taking advantage of the northerlies in the morning.

All of the training is for the European Championships beginning on the 16th of May. Being my first big regatta on the IQFoil, I have no quantitative goals, only to learn and observe from the best so that Team USA, and myself can work our way up to the top of the class.

All the best,

Noah Lyons
